Frequently Asked Questions / Troubleshooting

Please find below some common questions people have regarding remote monitoring, and some possible solutions to common issues encountered.

What is remote monitoring and how does it work?

Remote monitoring is a means by which we can check the functioning of your implanted cardiac device and your heart rhythm from your home.

We believe remote monitoring has many benefits, and is primarily designed to provide you with better care and make it more convenient for you and your doctor to manage your heart condition and implanted device.

Data stored in your implanted cardiac device (i.e. pacemaker, defibrillator etc) is sent to our clinic (usually via the mobile network or landline telephone connection) where it is analysed by a highly trained cardiac scientist before being sent to your doctor for final review.

If there are any concerns regarding your device or heart condition you will be contacted by our clinic.

How long has remote monitoring been in Australia?

Adelaide Cardiology was one of 5 pilot sites involved in the clinical trial which paved the way for remote monitoring to be introduced to Australia in 2008. As such we operate one of the longest running remote clinics in Australia, and have amassed one of the largest bodies of experience in the country.

How do I tell if my cardiac device is compatible with remote monitoring?

The vast majority of all devices implanted now are compatible with remote monitoring. Even if your device was implanted around 2010 it is likely it will be compatible. However there are some which may not be compatible, so please contact us with your device information and we can inform you whether your device is suitable or not.

Do I need a computer, a mobile phone or access to the internet to use remote monitoring?

No. There are various ways in which your device can send data to our clinic, but in general you only need to have mobile network coverage in your home or a standard telephone land-line connection. In some cases you can even use a Smart Phone App. The type of connection you can use can be discussed with us once we know your specific device.

How often is data from my device sent to your clinic?

If you have a wireless device, it will communicate with your home monitor every single day. If any potential issues are detected then it will be sent automatically to our clinic for our experienced staff to review.

As well as this, we will also schedule full automatic transmissions to occur at regular intervals (which will not require any patient involvement), to ensure optimal device performance and patient care.

If you have a non-wireless device then you will be asked to send us information at least every 3 months for us to review.

You can also send us data more frequently if you are experiencing problems or have any concerns, however please contact the clinic before sending any data to us so we can discuss your condition.

Does the Adelaide Cardiology clinic know if my remote monitor has been turned off?

Yes. We monitor the connectivity status of all our patients very carefully, and will be notified of any disruption to the service. We may contact you if we notice your monitor has become disconnected to our service, or if your monitor is unable to locate your implanted device. Depending on the network and implanted device, this timeframe will vary.

If you suspect there is a problem with your Monitor you should contact Adelaide Cardiology during office hours and seek assistance.

Should I leave my monitor connected and turned on all the time?

Yes. It is important you leave your monitor plugged in and turned on at all times, even if you go away for a holiday. Your monitor needs to stay connected so that it can continue to perform all of its functions optimally.

Should I take my monitor with me when I go away on holidays?

Your monitor will be able to work anywhere in Australia, and if you have a "mobile GSM" monitor it will work in most countries throughout the world.

However due to their size and fragility, if you go away on holidays for a few days or weeks, we normally recommend you leave your monitor at home.

Once you return home your monitor will "find" you again and begin to transmit any data that has been stored in your device whilst you were away.

There is no need to perform another set up procedure once you get home, it will continue to work seamlessly.

However, if you are travelling for an extended period (many months) you can choose to take it with you, this is totally at your discretion.

If you know you will be away for an extended period please let us know the dates so we can note them in our diary.

What do I do if I’m away from my Monitor?

If you have a wireless monitor and you are away from home or not beside your monitor when it attempts to talk to your implanted device, the monitor will continue to try to find your implanted device at regular intervals until you return home.

Since all data is stored within your implanted device, no data will be lost, it will remain stored in your implanted device and can be retrieved.

Once you return home your monitor and your implanted device will automatically pair up again and transmissions will resume normally.

If you are planning on taking a holiday for 2 weeks or more, please advise us of the dates you will be away from your monitor so we are aware.

Is remote monitoring an emergency service?

No, the remote monitoring service is not an emergency information system. In an emergency or in case of any type of medical complaint, you must notify your physician or GP or call 000 immediately and seek the appropriate medical care. Do not try to send information via your monitor. The website is not monitored continuously 24 hours a day.

I have ADSL Internet at home - will that cause me any problems?

If your monitor sends data to us using the mobile GSM network then there will be no problem.

If your monitor connects using a landline telephone, then you will need to use an in-line ADSL filter to prevent any issues from occurring with the data transmission.

What to do after a power blackout

After a power blackout confirm your monitor is still working by looking at the "power" light. If the power light is "on" and is solid, then everything is fine.

If you notice any lights are flashing, then disconnect your monitor from the power, leave it off for 10 seconds, then reconnect it to power and see if this solves the problem.

If the lights continue to flash, call the clinic for further advice.

Do you provide technical assistance?

Yes. Adelaide Cardiology will provide technical phone support during standard office hours to help you set up your Monitor or resolve any issues should you have a problem.
